Hey guys, hope you're enjoying your Sunday! I woke up this morning and had an interesting conversation with one of my dearest friends, so I wanted to bring my thoughts here to the blog. Before I jump into it, I would like to give a definition to colorism, which is discrimination based on color. Colorism is everywhere in our daily lives, such as the lightskinned versus darkskinned argument; and it's displayed everywhere, the biggest place being social media. My friend and I were discussing colorism within the Hispanic and Black community, how it's separating it's people and creating difficult standards of beauty and more. For example, a singer on Love and Hip Hop named Amara La Negra is Afro Latino and she heavily identifies with being Black. Amara is Dominican, but a lot of people from her country believe she is "too black" due to her skintone, her afro etc. Unfortunately, she has had a lot of people slander her for her appaearance, including those appearing on the show with her. On one of the episodes, she was faced with many microagressions being thrown her way by a producer she was planning to work with; such as being called "Nutella queen'" and psychotic. It's horrible to believe people associate skintones and features with levels of beauty and professionalism, and more importantly the people within the community allow it. As a Black person, I've heard other Black people discriminate against darker skin tones and place them at the bottom of society's hierarchy. This type of hate goes very far amongst our people and the Latino community, as there are people who have bleached their skin and changed their features just to embrace a certain image. Comment about what you think about colorism, has it progressed or regressed in the modern day?
